Inspiration strikes when we least expect it. I think that’s some Murphy’s Law thing, don’t you?
I don’t like to carry a lot of stuff around in my purse, and so I frequently find myself out and about without anything to write on. Of course, that’s exactly when I get a flash of inspiration.
Tired of being unprepared when my muse shows up, I finally decided to find a solution. Because I always have my phone with me–no matter what–I decided that a good, solid writing app would solve my problem. After performing several hours of research (that could have been better spent writing), and a few false starts, I have finally decided on a writing app for my mobile phone, tablet, and computer.
I wanted something that was a real word processor and would sync across all my devices so I wouldn’t have to retype whatever I just wrote while I was out once I finally got the time to sit down at my computer at home. Besides, have you ever tried to do that? Writing on your phone is bad enough, but then transcribing it — ugh, not fun.
I got several recommendations from friends and fellow writers and then spent a great deal of time researching each one, installing and uninstalling a couple of them in the process, before I finally settled on Evernote.
I chose Evernote because it has great features like the ability to save links (handy while doing research), make folders and subfolders, save pictures, and, you can actually write on it just like you would on a typical word processor. Not to mention that the data is stored in the cloud and is readily accessible from anywhere, on the three platforms I use most–my cell phone, my tablet, and my computer. If I’m ever out somewhere without my own computer, I can access my content on Evernote Web. As an added bonus, I can even email notes or share them via Twitter, Facebook, or LinkedIn. Plus, I discovered that I can export notes as .html documents and open them in my favorite writing program, Scrivener.
And, the final reason I settled on Evernote–it’s free! Yep, that’s right. Free. Free to download as an app on my phone. Free to download as an app on my tablet. And free to download as a program on my computer.
In my book, you can’t get better than that.
